Shabbat Prayer: Shabbat Mevarchim V

“May He redeem us soon and gather in our dispersed from the four corners of the earth.” The Talmud (Megillah 17b) says, What did the Sages see that led them to institute Redemption as the seventh blessing? Rava said, this is because Israel is destined to be redeemed on the seventh year of the Shemmitah cycle.

Rashi there comments that the redemption of the blessing does not refer to the redemption from exile, but for redemption from our constant suffering. We will  pray for the Ingathering of the Exiles in the Tenth blessing and the Rebuilding of Jerusalem in the Fourteenth blessing, and the Messiah in the Fifteenth blessing. Therefore the blessing of Redemption does not refer to the final Redemption but, as Rashi explained, to the redemption from all our suffering.

We see from here that there will be a redemption from suffering even before the ingathering of the exiles. That is why we say here in this phrase first, “May He redeem us soon,” referring to, and only then do we pray that He, “Gather in our dispersed.”
