Ki Tisa-Sassov-Only Half a Sin

The 12th of Adar is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Shlomo of Sassov-Levov (1919), and Rav Chananya Yom Tov Lipa (ben Chanoch Heinich) Teitelbaum, the Sassover Rebbe (1906-1966). He became a son-in;law of the Satmar Rav, when he married his daughter, Reizel, and headed his father-in-law’s yeshiva. He was buried in Teveria. He was succeeded by two sons (through his second wife), Rav Yosef Dovid – Sassover Rebbe in Kiryas Yismach Moshe in Eretz Yisrael – and Rav Chaonch Heinich – Sassover Rebbe in Monsey. “This shall they give, everyone who passes through the census – kol haOveir al haPikkudim – half a shekel as a portion to God (Exodus 30:13).” Even if a person has gone against God’s commandments, “kol haOveir al haPikkudim,” he he must understand that the beginning of his Tikkun, or fixing, is that it was only half; he can easily repair it by performing a single mitzvah and restoring the balance to the side of merit. (Rabbi Elazar of Sassov, Zichron Elazar)
