Amidah: Yom Yerushalayim: The First Moment of Olam

“Even in Shalem is set His Mishkan, and His dwelling place in Zion (Psalms 76:3).” Rabbi Berechiah taught: At the very beginning of His creation of the earth, the Holy One, Blessed is He, set a Succah in Jerusalem, within which, in a manner of speaking, He prayed: “Let it be My will that My children do My will, so that I will not destroy My house and My Temple.” (Midrash Tehillim 76:3)

“And to Jerusalem, Your city, may You return in compassion.” We are asking God to return to His Succah in Jerusalem at the very beginning of creation, to reconnect to that first prayer, so that we be empowered through that prayer to do His will, and create an environment in which His city and House live, “Binyan Olam,” as a structure that connects us to that first moment of the creation of the “Olam,” the world.
