Visiting the Ill: Conversation

There is a positive commandment to visit the ill, as it is written, “In the path on which they shall walk.” (Exodus 18:20) The Sages (Bava Metzia 30b) explain that this ‘walking’ refers specifically to visiting the ill.

One of the branches of this Mitzvah is to speak with the person who is ill, as Rabbi Shlomo Ibn Gabirol describes; “Vi’hacholim Tisicheim” – He converses with the ill. (Sefer Chareidim, Chapter 12:47)
