Parsha Mitzvot: Vayikra: Mitzvah 127 – Concept 349

“You shall salt your every meal-offering with salt. You may not discontinue the salt of your Lord’s covenant from upon your meal-offering, on your every offering shall you offer salt.” (Leviticus 2:13) It is forbidden to omit the salt from sacrifices. (Rambam, Hilchot Issurei Mizbeiach – The Laws of The Restrictions Concerning Sacrifices)

Salt contains two forces which are opposites of one another. They are fire and water, the power of warmth, i.e. the sun, which dries out the water making the salt congeal and solidify. In other words, heat, the opposite of water releases the power of the salt in the water. Seeing that water and fire are the two elements that ensure the existence and continuity of the universe, salt combines these two elements in its form. It is the catalyst for water and fire to interact.  Rabbeinu Bachya
