Tetzaveh: Akeidat Yitzchak: Mitzvah 103 – Concept 319

“Its head-opening shall be folded over within it, its opening shall have a border all around of weaver’s work. It shall be for it like the opening of a coat of mail – it may not be torn.” (Exodus 28:32) It is prohibited to tear the Priestly garments. (Rambam, Hilchot Klei Hamikdash V’Haovdim Bo – The Laws of The Temple Vessels and Employees)

Clothing is symbolic of acquired traits. Already in the wording of the commandments there is a reference to the concepts of Midot – Character Traits. We observe the term middah being used for garments, illustrating the essential nature of garments, at least when worn by the Cohanim.

The first impression that one has when meeting another person is that of the clothes he wears. It suggests his occupation, and certain of his traits.

Secondly, people wear different sets of clothing for the Shabbat and weekdays. By wearing different clothing on Shabbat, we signal that we assume different character traits on Shabbat.

Thirdly, just as man is never completely nude, so he is never completely devoid of Mitzvot. (Akeidat Yitzchak)
