Parsha Mitzvot: Shemini: Mitzvah 160 – Concept 182

“And everything that does not have fins and scales in the seas and in the streams, from all that teems in the water, and from all living creatures in the water; they are an abomination to you. And they shall remain an abomination to you; you shall not eat of their flesh and you shall abominate their carcass. Everything that does not have fins and scales in the water; it is an abomination to you (Vayikra 11:10-12) We may not eat non-kosher fish (Rambam, Ma’achalot Assurot – The Laws of Forbidden Foods).

We may not allow ourselves, even for a moment, to be “naked” of Mitzvot and holiness, as a fish without scales and fins. We must dress ourselves in Mitzvot and sanctity to protect our souls. (Orot ha-Mitzvah)
