Prayer Tools: Who Sets Your Path?

On the Shabbat of my Bar Mitzvah, my father zt”l asked me for what I prayed in my first prayer as a Bar Mitzvah. “I want to be a Talmid Chacham like Pa!” My father responded after pinching my cheek, “When you pray about your path in serving God having already decided how you want to serve God, for example, if you say, ‘I want to be a Zevulun who supports Torah,’ or, ‘I want to be the Yissachar who learns Torah,’ you are asking only for yourself rather than for God. You should pray that God will help you find the path He intends for you.” (12-7-72)
