Prayer: Sha’arei Tefillah: Careful Pronunciation

The 3rd of Adar is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Binyamin Zev Lev, Rav of Verboi and author of Shaarei Tefilah (1851). The frontpiece of the first edition of his sefer offers the following story:

A great Mekubal visited another in a dream one year after the first had died. He said that he lay, stuck in his grave for a year before being brought out for judgment. His first glance was of a dark sky filled with fiery stars. “I asked the Angels what the lights were, and they responded, ‘Each one is a vowel that you did not pronounce carefully and correctly in your prayers. They are prosecuting you in front of the Heavenly Tribunal, and each vowel, of each word, of each prayer, of each day of your life, is lined up to claim its dignity. This is why you had to wait so long before being brought before the court!”
