Mishpatim: Chafetz Chaim: Mitzvah 60 – Concept 583
“One who strikes his father or mother shall surely be put to death.” (Exodus 21:15) You may not strike your father and mother. (Rambam, Hilchot Mamrim – The Laws of Insurgents)
The Chofetz Chaim says that if one speaks Lishon Harah, evil, about their mother or father, they are included in, “Accursed is the one who degrades his father or mother.” (Deuteronomy 27:16)
My father zt”l ruled that this does not apply to discussing one’s parents in therapy. He instructed me to consider this Halacha when being asked a Halachic question about the obligation to honor and have awe for one’s parents. A “Curse” may not automatically be ignored even when a parent does not act as a parent.
