Mishlei Tools-Zlotchov-Demanding of God

The 5th of Nisan is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Moshe (ben Shlomo) Rokeach (1939), Kiev-Zlotchover Rebbe. He is a descendent of Rav Elazar of Amsterdam. He is buried in Mount Judah Cemetery in Queens, NY.

A poor man came to the Radviller Rabbi and complained of his poverty. The Radviller had no money to give him, but, in lieu of a donation, he comforted him with the words of the verse, “For whom God loves, He rebukes (Proverbs 3:12).”

His father, the Zlotchover Maggid, witnessed this and said to his son, “Truly this is an unworthy way to help the indigent. This is how you should understand the verse, ‘ For he who loves God shall argue with Him.’ He should plead, ‘ Why should You cause a man to put himself to shame by begging for charity when it is in Your power, O God, to provide him all his necessities in an honorable fashion?’ (Ateret haTzaddikim, page, 18)
