Midot Hayom: Day 7: Malchut in Chesed

“Let your house be open wide.” How should one fulfill this? A person’s house should have a wide entrance on the south, the east, the west, and the north, like Iyov, who made four doors to his house. Why did Iyov do this? So the poor would not have to take pains going all around the house; whether one came from the north, south, east or west, he could enter directly. Avot of Rabbi Nathan 7:1

All must feel that their individual needs are being met. All must have access from where they are. Chesed must always be expressed as a universal right.

Some have a custom to have a table prepared near the front door with Styrofoam cups and plastic utensils so they van offer coffee and tea to all who come to their door to ask for help.

We should never say that “We only give to certain people or groups.”
