Midot Hayom: Day 18: Netzach in Tiferet

Rabbi Yehuda called Rabbi Yose Hagelili: “A talented collector of Torah insights, as he gathered insights even from less important scholars, for he is free of haughtiness.” He learned the quality of humility from Mt. Sinai and he instilled this quality in all the Sages of Israel. Avot of Rabbi Nathan 18:2

Rabbi Yose’s humility allowed him to be able to recognize the value of the Torah insights, no matter who was the source. Each time he “collected” one of those insights he raised the value of the lesser scholar.

We often do not have the patience to listen to the Torah of others who know less than we have studied. Students of great rabbis find it difficult to listen to “lesser” rabbis teach Torah. On this day of the Omer we remember to practice the humility of honoring the true Torah insights of anyone and everyone.
