Master & Servant: Eliezer

“A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due Me? If I am a master, where is the respect due Me?’ says God, Lord of Hosts (Malachi 1:6).”

Eliezer arrived at the house of Betuel with great treasures, yet, rather than present himself as Abraham’s friend or partner, he repeatedly reminds all that he is only Abraham’s servant. It was as if he saying that all that wealth was nothing compared to being Abraham’s servant (Zohar I; Toledot).

When we proclaim on Rosh Hashanah that we are God’s servants, we are declaring that nothing we have compares to the honor of being a servant of God.
