Lights XXX

“My heart is engulfed, my strength has forsaken me, and the light of my eyes, they, too, are no longer with me.” (Psalms 38:11) A person looks forward to sin with great expectation, the very thing that attracts him to sin. Yet, once he has sinned he often feels that he is weak. The attraction was only temporary. The light disappears. (Maharam M’Brisk)

The light of a Mitzvah only increases and adds to a person’s joy and energy. The light is real and therefore lasts.

The contrast between the light of attraction and real light is fundamental to a person’s approach to Service of God.

ToolsApplication:
Reflect on the difference between the different experiences of light you have had over the past year. Determine which moments of light quickly dissipated and which lasted. Use the moments of lasting light as part of your intention when you light the Chanukah candles.
