Lights XIX

“And this earth was once confused and tangled, and darkness was over the turmoil, and the Breath of the Lord hovered above the waters.” (Genesis 1:2) There was no light to penetrate the mass to awaken the gems slumbering in this mass to individual separate development.

“Or” with an ‘Aleph’ is related to “Or” with an ‘Ayin’ – to be awake, to become or to be receptive to external impressions. Light is the awakening element that awakens all forces to development. (Rabbi Samson R. Hirsch Genesis 1:2-3)
