Parsha Mitzvot-Ki Tisa-Mitzvah 108 – Concept 279

“Six days shall you work and on the seventh day you shall desist; you shall desist from plowing and harvesting.” (Exodus 34:21) We must rest the land during the seventh year by not doing any work which enhances growth. (Rambam, Hilchot Shemittah V’Yovail – The Laws of the Sabbatical and Jubilee Years)

Why are plowing and harvesting specifically mentioned? Our Sages teach that this refers to plowing before the Seventh year that will improve the field during the Shemittah, and to the harvesting of the produce of the seventh year that has remained after the year ends, to teach us that one should add from the mundane to the holy. (Rashi)
