Haggadah-What God Hides

The 5th of Nisan is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Avraham Yehoshua Heshel of Apt, the Ohev Yisrael. The Apter once was visited by a woman of evil repute to take his counsel. The Rabbi rebuked her, saying, “Woman, after sinning in secret, how dare you soil my lodgings with your breath?”

The woman made an unabashed reply, “God knows more of my sin than do you, yet He doesn’t rush to present His reckoning, nor does He reveal my secret or turn His face from me. Yet the Rabbi of Apt, sitting in judgment, thinks it no wrong to discover what God has hidden!”

The Apter used to say, “No one ever overcame me in argument, except this woman!”

Tzafun: Eating The Hidden Afikoman: Our enjoyment of the Afikoman comes from our joy that God hides our sins from His Judgment as he looks at us with love and compassion.
