Haggadah-The Simple Son-Apter Rav

The 5th of Nisan is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Avraham Yehoshua Heshel of Apt, the Ohev Yisrael. The Apter observed several young Chassidim studying a profound book of the Kabbalah, while an old man, the Shamash, was setting the Beit Midrash in order. He went over to the young men and said, “No doubt you consider yourselves much better Jews than this ignorant Shamash. Let me inform you, however, that you will find it necessary to labor earnestly before you can attain the position of this old man as a simple hearted, unsophisticated Jew.” (Dor Dei’ah, page 230)
