Rabbi Bunam’s teaching of rationalism and learning prompted many of his adherents to ridicule the opposite qualities among the adherents of other tzaddikim. His neighbor, a disciple of Rabbi Bunam, in ridicule of the charm, dyed it black, thereby destroying its virtue, according to believers. (Meir Einei haGolah)
