General Principles of Prayer 9
Maimonides develops the concept of prayer beyond the realization that God listens and that I can turn to Him in prayer. Maimonides teaches that Prayer is an act of subservience. Prayer is an acknowledgment of my total dependency on God. That is the mitzvah of Service of the Heart. Don’t let a day go by in which you do not consciously acknowledge the lordship of God, your subservience to Him, and your acceptance of Him as the source of all being. That is the mitzvah of Prayer, and that is also the accomplishment of Prayer. The Sages made Prayer as the substitute of the Temple Offerings.
