Elul: Ask Your Local Cannibal

Sometimes we have to consult with the strangest people: Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish taught: If you sold your healthy body to the Luddites, who are cannibals, you could have gotten a great price, but now, that you have not cared for your health, you will receive very little. You sacrifice long-term benefit for immediate pleasures. (Talmud Yerushalmi: Terumot 43)

We often and easily lose sight of our value as human beings. Rather than consult with the local cannibal, we can use Elul to recover our sense of value.
