Countdown to Pesach 5-Slavery

If there are servants or workers, even someone who cleans the house, in the home, they should never be made to feel inferior or insulted. The ideal is for the servants to be seen, in a sense, as part of the family.

Job declares that he would have deserved his punishment, “If I did despise the cause of my man servant, or of my maidservant, when they contended with me (Job 31:13).”

There is a tale about a Chassidic master whose wife had a quarrel with her maid, and summoned the maid to a lawsuit. When the wife saw her husband putting on his overcoat to go to the courtroom, she said, “You do not have to go. I can plead adequately myself.”

Whereupon the Rabbi said, “I am not going along to plead on your behalf, but on behalf of the maid,” and he quoted this verse from Job.
