Binyamin & Kislev II
The 24th of Cheshvan is the Yahrtzeit of Binyamin son of Yaakov Avinu. As we approach Rosh Chodesh Kislev, the month of Binyamin (Kitvei Ha’Ari) we honor the youngest of the Shivtei Ka with this selection from the Pri Tzaddik, Rosh Chodesh Kislev #2):
‘Kislev’ is related to ‘kisli’ as in, “If I ever put my trust – kisli – in gold, or ever said of jewels, ‘This is my security.’” (Job 31:24) The verse in Proverbs (3:26) uses the word in the same manner: “For God will be your security – v’chislecha.” Kislev reflects trust and security in our relationship with God.
It appears that the Avodah – self-development work – of this month is to develop stronger trust and a deeper sense of security in God.
This is why the Ari teaches that Kislev is the month of Binyamin who “dwells in security with God.” (Deuteronomy 33)
The great miracle of Chanukah came in the merit of those who trusted in God to save them despite the terrible odds against them.
