The Chafetz Chaim once bent down to pick up a piece of paper from a pile of garbage on the ground, concerned that it might be a torn page from a holy book. He quickly realized that it was a plain piece of paper, thought for a few seconds, and then carefully put it into his pocket to through away someplace else.

His students wondered why he did not simply throw it back onto the pile of garbage. “Someone else may bend down just as I did, thinking, as did I, that it may be a page from a holy book. I do not want someone else to bend for nothing, so I will throw it away where it won’t catch the attention of anyone else.”
