Amidah-Three Weeks-Yerushalayim: From Whose View?

When we pray for God to rebuild Jerusalem we are looking back into history, remembering Jerusalem as it was during the time of the First and Second Temples. We are praying for God to restore what once was. However, we must remember the prayers of others for Jerusalem; the prayers of those who entered Israel with Joshua and knew that there would be a city, “the chosen place of God,” one which had yet to be identified for them.

Their prayers for Jerusalem were not for once was, but for what will be.

We too can pray not only for the Jerusalem we remember, but for the Jerusalem that will be; even greater than the Jerusalem of the past. We are praying for more than what we once had. We want something even better, more sanctified, more connected to God.
