Al Hanissim: Chatam Sofer
“When the wicked Greek kingdom rose up against Your people Israel to make them forget Your Torah and compel them to stray from the statutes of Your Will.” The Greeks did not intend
to have us completely forget Torah. They intended to influence us to approach Torah as another field of wisdom. They did not want us to study Torah as an expression of the Divine Will, as something beyond wisdom. They considered Torah to have great wisdom, and they wanted us to keep that wisdom. The Greeks honored wisdom.
However, as far as we are concerned, when someone studies Torah as another field of wisdom, he has forgotten the essence of Torah, which is an opportunity to distill the Divine Wisdom and share in the expression of that Will.
