My Uncle Noach zt”l always described this feeling with a story:  You’re walking down a dark alley.  All of a sudden this dog comes out from the shadows, growling and roaring.  Which way do you turn? – The other way!  You turn around, but there’s a lion crouching for the spring.  Which way do you go? – You go back to the dog!  Better to face the dog than the lion!  You have to be willing to take on fears in order to improve.  It’s going to be tough.  You just have to realize which is the more important thing to fear.
