Prayer For One's Self Print E-mail
Written by Rabbi Simcha Weinberg

The Kav HaYashar (Chapter 71) writes: “A person should be very careful not to mention his name when praying for himself for one who mentions his name calls attention to himself and he is carefully judged to determine whether he merits a positive response. The Zohar derives this principle from the story of the Shunamit woman’s response to Elisha the prophet. “Is there any matter you would like me to raise before the king”, asked Elisha. The Zohar understands Elisha’s offer as praying to the King of Kings. She responded, “I live amidst my nation.” The Zohar explains that she did not want Elisha to mention her name and call attention to her circumstances.
