Pirkei Avot 1:7: Tzitdkat HaTzaddik Print E-mail
Written by Machberes Avodas Hashem

Pirkei Avot“Nittai of Arbel says: Distance yourself from a bad neighbor; do not associate with a wicked person; and do not despair of retribution (Avot 1:7).” “Do not associate with a wicked person,” even to perform a Mitzvah (Mechiltah), as is explicitly stated, “Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Yehoshaphat, saying: 'Because you have joined with Achaziah, God has made a breach in your works.' And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish (II Chronicles 20:37).” Although Yehoshafat joined with Achaziah only to battle Aram.

And it says, “My son, do not walk in the way with them, restrain your foot from their path (Proverbs 1:15).” There is a general rule that when the word, ‘Derech’ appears in Mishlei, it refers to the path of Torah and Mitzvot (Tzidkat haTzaddik #48).
