Beit Midrash-Apter Rav-When The Leader Is Responsible Print E-mail
Written by Machberes Avodas Hashem

Yahrtzeit-Apter-RavThe 5th of Nisan is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Avraham Yehoshua Heshel of Apt, the Ohev Yisrael. Rabbi Bunam's new system greatly vexed the Apter, and the latter remarked to a Chassid of his opponent, that a leader is responsible for the conduct of his adherents. Therefore, Rabbi Bunam should be condemned for the unseemly acts of his disciples. “We find in the Talmud that a Tanna was blamed for a cow of his neighbor which carried a load on the Shabbat, inasmuch as the Tanna had authority over his neighbor (Shabbat 54).

Rabbi Bunam's Chassid answered, “In Apt, your Chassidim dared to insult my Rebbe, Rabbi Bunam. Is it permissible to insult a scholar?”

“But I did not know about it,” responded the Apter.

Quick as a flash, the Chassid exclaimed, “But, Rabbi, the Cow!” (Meir Einei HaGolah)
