Beit Midrash-Rav Shimon Sofer Print E-mail
Written by Machberes Avodas Hashem

Yahrtzeit-Rav-Shimon-SoferThe 17th of Adar is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Shimon (ben Moshe) Sofer (1821-1883). Born in Pressburg, the second son of the Chasam Sofer, he became Rav of Mattersdorf in 1844 and Rav of Krakow in 1861, where he stayed until his petira. Author of Michtav Sofer. In 1879, he was chosen to represent the frum Yidden in the Austrian parliament. He was buried in Krakow’s old cemetery.

Rabbi Shimon Sofer said in the name of his father, that each person, when he grows old, he will either find that his memory or his intellectual capacity have been weakened.  “I thank God,” said the Chatam Sofer, “that it is my memory that is weaker and not my intellectual capacity.”
