The 14th of Adar is the Yahrtzeit of Rav Yaakov (ben Avraham) Kahana (1826), author of Gaon Yaakov. Rav Kahana did his best to hide himself so that none would know of his greatness. However, he was so beloved to people
for his constant smile, his humility, his apparent love of God and his love of God's creations, who served God with happiness and a full heart, and despised any honor or any official position, that they lined up for his advice and his blessing. Even with all the people who came to him, none knew that he barely had enough to eat or even to survive. It was a rare Shabbat when he had more then wine and bread. His wife, said nothing.
Eventually, people did find out about his physical suffering and offered to support, but he refused. It was only in his old age that he accepted a position in Amsterdam to lead the community that he was finally able to live with a modicum of comfort.
