Rambam: Aggadic Derashot Print E-mail

WritingsCommentary on the Mishna: The Aggadic Derashot are not to be taken lightly. On the contrary, one should view them seriously, because they are full of great wisdom, amazing secrets and precious treasures. If you look at these Derashot from an intellectual perspective, you will discover in them the supreme essential good. These Derashot contain ideas about God and the essential good that the mystics keep hidden and do not want to reveal. They also contain ideas that the philosophers dealt with. Yet, on the surface they seem to be utter nonsense.

The Sages had very good reasons for disguising these lofty ideas. In the first place, they wanted to sharpen their students’ wits and broaden their minds. Also, they wanted to pull the wool over the eyes of the fools, who would not be able to grasp their true meaning. If the fools would be shown the splendor of these truths, in their ignorance they would ridicule them. The Talmud says about these fools, “Do not reveal the secret to them.” (Kiddushin 71a) since they do not have enough intelligence to grasp the mystical truth.
